Why We're Rebuilding Segmio: AI-Powered Financial Projections, Rebuilt from Scratch

Segmio’s journey is one of continuous evolution, built on everything we’ve learned across two generations.

We launched the first version of Segmio in 2022. It was a prototype: rough, limited, but real. People used it, gave us feedback, and we learned more in those first months than we had in the two years building it. The second generation launched in August 2024 with proper asset tracking, cash flow visibility, goal-setting, debt management and financial projections. It was a significant step up. And then we went quiet.

Here is what actually happened.

We Went Back to the Spreadsheet

Before Segmio was a web app, it was a spreadsheet. A personal one we had been building and refining since 2018 to manage our own finances. When we launched the second generation of the app, we also made that spreadsheet public for the first time.

The response surprised us. People in 55 countries bought it. Then we made more templates: monthly budgeting, net worth tracking, retirement planning, travel planning, tax planning. Each one sold. Each one taught us something new about how people think about money and what they actually need from a financial planning tool.

We called this FinancialAha, and it became something we hadn’t expected: a business that funded everything, and a research engine that told us exactly what to build next.

What We Learned from Users in 55+ Countries

When you have customers in the US, the UK, Australia, Germany, Canada and dozens of other countries all using the same financial planning tool, patterns emerge. People everywhere struggle with the same core problem: they don’t have a clear picture of where they stand financially, and they have no way to model where they’re going.

Budgeting apps tell you where your money went. That’s useful, but it’s looking backwards. What people actually want is to look forward. They want to know: if I keep doing what I’m doing, what does my financial future look like? And what happens if I change something?

The second generation of Segmio answered the first question reasonably well. It didn’t answer the second well enough.

Why Form-Based Financial Projections Fail Most People

Every financial planning tool on the market handles scenario modeling the same way: forms. Endless forms. Change this number, adjust that assumption, recalculate. It works, technically. But it’s slow, it’s rigid, and it requires the user to already know what questions to ask.

Most people don’t know what questions to ask. They have a vague sense that something could be different: a career change, a move, an early retirement, but turning that into a structured financial projection feels like work. So they don’t do it. They stick with the default projection and hope for the best.

This is the problem we’re solving with the third generation.

How AI Changes Financial Scenario Modeling

The rebuild started with one question: what if the AI did the hard work?

Not AI as a chatbot bolted onto an existing product. AI as the actual engine. Segmio’s third generation is built around what we call scenario discovery. The app surfaces alternative projections automatically, based on your data, without you having to ask. And when you do want to model something specific, you describe it in plain language:

“What if I quit my job in 2028, travel for a year spending €3,000/month, then start consulting part-time?”

Segmio parses that into a structured scenario and models it against your current projection. No forms. No assumptions you have to manually encode. Just your question, answered with real numbers.

That’s the core. Around it we’ve built everything the second generation was missing: mobile-first design with a quick update flow optimized for how people actually use their phones, collaboration for couples and financial advisors, country-specific tax modeling for users anywhere in the world, and onboarding that gets you to a meaningful projection in two minutes.

We also made a decision we’re not going back on: privacy-first, no exceptions. No selling your data, no unnecessary collection, no bank connections unless you want them.

Why AI Makes This the Right Time to Rebuild

We could have kept iterating on the second generation. We chose not to because the problem we’re trying to solve deserves a better foundation than we had. The AI capabilities available today didn’t exist when we built the second generation. The market insight we have from 55+ countries through FinancialAha didn’t exist either. And frankly, the clarity we now have about what Segmio should be, and what it should not be, only came from going quiet for a while and paying attention.

Segmio is not a budgeting app. It’s not an expense tracker. It’s not a banking aggregator. It’s a serious financial projections tool for people who want to understand their financial future, model their decisions, and move forward with confidence.

Third generation. Coming soon.
